"Wish I’d had pet insurance" story – painful choice to euthanize

I put out a plea for pet health stories on the Embrace Facebook page to illustrate why you might want pet insurance and Kate, one of our Embracers, shared this heart-felt story with me.

Examples like Kate’s are exactly why you would want pet insurance.

372_588914194304_3201_nFor as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted a dog. So naturally when I moved into an apartment that allowed animals, I eagerly adopted my very first dog, Solo. He was a happy, healthy, scruffy mutt and I just loved him to pieces. Solo was about 4 years old when I got him and some sort of a Lab/American Eskimo/Dachshund mix. I only had about a month with Solo before his accident. One day, while running down the stairs to go outside, Solo tripped and fell down the last couple of stairs. He popped up, no worse for the wear, with no limp, so I assumed he was fine. However, over the course of 5 hours the following day, Solo became paralyzed in his hind legs. He went from slightly limping to full-on dragging his legs behind him. I rushed him to my vet where the prognosis was not good; they confirmed that he had slipped a disk in his back and would not walk again.

I was given 3 options: put him down, try expensive surgery that was not guaranteed to work or let him live his life paralyzed. I knew I didn’t want to let him suffer so a paralyzed life was not an option; I was left with surgery or euthanasia. Now at this time, I had never heard of pet insurance and even if I had, I doubt I would have understood the value of it. I was young and insurance was like a foreign language to me. Sadly, since I could not afford the expensive surgery and since it was not guaranteed to work, I had to make the difficult decision to put Solo down.

If I had pet insurance then I could have at least tried the surgery. I could have given Solo a fighting chance. Now that it’s many years later and I have since adopted another dog, I immediately got him pet insurance. I can rest easy, knowing that if something happens I will be financially prepared to do whatever is necessary to save my dog.
